In response to an invitation from CST (Commission Supérieure Technique de l’Image et du Son—the official body of cinema, television, AV and multimedia professionals in France), Doremi Technologies has supported the shooting, editing and replay of 180-degree material shown at the Cannes Film Festival 2004. The special footage was shot on the Greek Island of Santorini, well known for its wonderful light and excellent colours.
Totavision is designed to shoot in a number of different panoramic angles from 120 up to the full 360 degrees.
Unlike previous panoramic cameras the lightweight and compact Totavision camera, which weighs just 10kg, made the shoot easy to set up. Additionally only a small crew was needed for the set-up and shoot of the panoramic footage.
The Doremi disk recording system for Totavision, based on multiple standard recorders used for digital television, is also portable and proved to be very reliable. Besides being a ‘lossless’ system, the maintenance of absolute synchronism, so that the six separate recording channels continuously operated as a single channel, was also essential to the success of the shoot.
This year’s contribution follows on from the Cannes 2003 Digital HD Stereo replay of James Cameron’s Ghosts of the Abyss. Patrick Zucchetta, Business Development Manager, Doremi Technologies said that Doremi will “continue to push back the boundaries of digital image recording.
This medium has huge potential. After a mere 100 years of film there are now any number of new opportunities to explore for many forms of entertainment. Today we are just standing at the threshold, so I can’t wait for Cannes next year.”
